–Nina Patterson to Tyler O'Neill, Pilot

Nina Patterson is one of the first characters to be introduced in Season 1 of the original Scream television series.

Background

Nina was the popular and wealthy queen bee, similar to Brooke. However, it's learned that she was far from a saint as she was a narcissistic manipulator who used schemes, blackmail, and sex to get her way and was a big-time bully as she has psychologically and emotionally tortured Audrey Jensen ever since the 4th grade. Before her death, Nina was dating Tyler O'Neill with whom she was cheating on him on a few occasions, one of them being their friend Will Belmont, boyfriend of her friend Emma Duval. Nina's murder (and Tyler's) marks the 2015 massacre in Lakewood, reinitiated weeks before the 21st anniversary of the first in 1994 .

She was portrayed by Bella Thorne.

Biography

2015 Lakewood Murders

Scream S01E01 Pilot Nina walks

Nina was eagerly witnessing the attention her video of Audrey Jensen was receiving with Tyler O'Neill, justifying her cruelty by saying that it was "the law of nature." Tyler attempted to persuade Nina into letting him spend the night with her, but Nina refused and admitted that she had only wanted him for his "tech-savvy" in order to anonymously post and send out the video. Nina went into her lavish house and began undressing to get into the hot tub. Whilst doing this, she received chilling messages and Snapchat-esque videos from an anonymous number, with the messages implying that the sender was nearby and could hear her. Nina was not severely alarmed by the messages, believing them to be from a scorned Tyler. Under that assumption, Nina seductively entered the hot tub wearing a black bikini and continued to toy with the texter until Tyler's severed head was tossed into the hot tub. Nina screamed in horror, grabbed her phone, and scrambled out of the hot tub. She aimlessly ran across her backyard before hiding behind a tree and unsuccessfully trying to call 9-1-1 by using Siri (due to being unable to dial her passcode to call 9-1-1 with her fingers being wet). Frightened, Nina tried to get into her house, yelling out for help so her neighbors could hear, but found all the patio doors were locked.

Nina's body

The killer then appeared behind Nina and slashed horizontally across her back with a hunting knife. While bleeding in anguish, Nina fell over and stumbled across the patio, but fell onto the grass. She feebly tried to crawl away, but was caught and lifted up by the masked maniac near the edge of the swimming pool. Nina pleaded for her life, only for the masked maniac to respond by swiftly slicing Nina's throat open, letting the girl choke on her own blood. The killer then carelessly tossed the limp Nina into the swimming pool, not even bothering to see if she was alive. Nina quickly succumbed to her wounds, floating face-down in the water.

Trivia

  • Her character is a tribute to Casey Becker from Scream (1996) .
    • Both are played by a famous big-named Hollywood actress of her time, in this case Bella Thorne being killed in the first few minutes.
    • Both are murdered after finding the body of their boyfriend and are found dead by their respective mothers.
      • Curiously, Bella went through a similar situation as Drew. She had been offered the role of Emma Duval, but the filming was going to be in Louisiana and she didn't want to move there. But she asked to be a small character like Nina because she had never been killed off on screen.
  • Shares many similarities with Maureen Prescott, as both of their deaths highly impacted the characters.
  • Nina was one of the popular mean girls at George Washington High.
  • She was involved in a blackmailing scheme with Will, Tyler and Jake for money.
  • Before her death, Emma and Nina didn't seem to have the best relationship, even more so after Nina's secrets start spilling.
  • In The Dance, it was shown through a video that Nina tried to flirt with Kieran in a bar.
    • The video was recorded by Rachel who was at the same bar.
  • She cheated on Tyler with Will Belmont, and apparently several other jocks.
    • It is unknown if Tyler ever found out or was aware of Nina cheating on him before his death.
  • According to Lorraine Brock, Nina died on September 30, 2015.
    • However, in the Pilot, Nina’s phone says September 15.
  • Nina relentlessly tormented Audrey Jensen since fourth grade, mainly because Audrey was bi-sexual and a social outcast in Lakewood.
  • A video of Nina’s death is briefly shown in the Zenith Theater in When a Stranger Calls.
  • Bella Thorne stated that Nina will appear in flashbacks throughout Season 2. However, that was later confirmed to be false.
  • Nina's role as the "sexual sniper" of Lakewood and to male students at George Washington High School (according to Jake), due to her promiscuity, and sassiness in her character, is a reference to the stereotype of the sex appeal character, stereotypically female, dying in the Scream franchise.
    • This trait, as well as Nina also being a redhead, would be referenced approximately 8 years later by the character of Quinn Bailey in Scream VI, whose character was the opposite, as Quinn was shown to be "sex-positive" and less of a mean-girl than Nina was.
      • Both were also students at each one's respective educational institutions (Nina as a junior at George Washington High in Lakewood, Quinn as a freshman at Blackmore University in New York City).
        • Unlike Quinn, however, Nina wasn't a killer.
